What is TOPSoccer?
TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) was started by US Youth Soccer in 1991 to serve as a community-based program for younger athletes with mental or physical disabilities. Our own NC Fusion TOPSoccer organization has adapted the traditional formula to make it our own.
TOPSoccer furthers NC Fusion’s mission of fostering the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels. In short, TOPSoccer takes kids from watching on the sidelines to participating in the game. Just talk with the parents or participants of TOPSoccer, and you’ll understand why our program has touched all those involved.
Benefits of TOPSoccer
TOPSoccer is truly a meaningful experience for all involved. The Buddies, youth volunteers from the community, enjoy playing with their Athletes, kids and teens with disabilities, every week. Our Athletes love playing with their Buddy, who is there solely to play and socialize with them. All in all, Athletes and Buddies develop a sense of belonging to the community, learn the value of being part of a team, and improve their self-esteem, fitness, and social skills. Another great benefit of TOPSoccer is for the parents, who cherish the opportunity to socialize with others, or simply watch their Athlete enjoy themselves every Sunday.
What, When and Where?
In an effort to bring kids together, both with disabilities and without, our TOPSoccer sessions are centered around the interaction between Athletes and Buddies. After a brief welcome and a stretch, Athletes and Buddies are released to play in whatever manner they so choose, before reconvening for a community game and closing cheer. Together, Athletes and their Buddies have a chance to play field games, kick goals, hula hoop, play frisbee, and generally do all of the things that kids love to do.
TOPSoccer is open to any child, age three* or older, regardless of diagnosis or ability. Our players include children with autism, Down syndrome, intellectual and motor challenges, Cerebral Palsy, and other disabilities.
Find us at Proehlific Park’s indoor turf field (located at 4517 Jessup Grove Road in Greensboro) Sundays from 4:00-5:00!

TOPSoccer relies on many different organizations as well as NC Fusion soccer players to have a successful season. We need Coaches, Buddies, and other supportive roles. Anyone 12 years or older is encouraged to volunteer and is required to attend a training session prior to the start of the season. All volunteers working in direct contact with the players are required to:
1 be available at least four of the six play dates;
2 attend a training session at Proehlific Park on February 23rd, 2020 from 3:00pm – 4:00pm;
3 complete the risk management form: Click Here.
(Risk Management application only has to be completed ONCE per seasonal year. If you have already completed this for the 2019-2020 soccer seasonal year, you do NOT have to do it again. You cannot participate until you have completed this task. In addition to the Risk Management Application, volunteers will also have to complete Abuse Prevention Training. Information on how to complete that training will be sent at a later date. The Abuse Prevention Training also only needs to be completed once per year. You do NOT have to complete it again if you have already done so earlier in the 2018-2019 seasonal year. Minors must complete the Risk Management Application and the Abuse Prevention Training too).
4 and enroll as a TOPSoccer Volunteer: Login to your account and register as a TOPSoccer VOLUNTEER. Please do not register as a “Participant”. If you do not have a account, please create one. The Link to Volunteer Registration is at this bottom of this page.
5 Volunteer registration is open and will close at 11:59pm on February 14th, 2020. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Each coach will supervise a small group of players and their soccer buddies as they participate in the stations and games. In this non-competitive league the goals are learning and having fun, so the job of the coach will be to facilitate and encourage each player to do their best. We ask that each coach commit to volunteer for the full season. A manual with detailed lesson plans, pointers and resources is provided to all coaches. Coaches are required to attend the volunteer training session.
Soccer buddies are the most important part of the team. Your goal is to keep the player engaged in the game and to have fun. You can assist by modeling the skills and encouraging them to do their best. Experience with soccer or special needs is welcome, but not necessary. Since consistency is important for our players we ask that buddies commit to at least 4 of the play dates. Soccer buddies are required to attend the volunteer training session.
If you want to volunteer but cannot commit to the majority of the play dates, we will find a way to involve you. We need volunteers in many other areas, including first day registration and photographer. Any volunteer who will not work directly with the players is encouraged to attend the training session.
