Age Group Changes

Reason for the Change

Starting with the 2026–27 season, the new standard will adopt a seasonal model, defining age groups from August 1 to July 31. Currently, we use a birth-year model (January 1 – December 31) to define age groups, a system mandated by U.S. Soccer in 2017 to align with FIFA international standards.

The largest youth soccer governing bodies—US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO—have agreed to move to the “school year” model to create a unified path forward in player development and age groupings. NC Fusion Youth must comply with this change to remain eligible for participation in US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, NPL, and ECNL league play and competitions.

This decision follows extensive review, discussion, and consultation with experts, feedback, and data. According to US Youth Soccer, the updated age group formation aims to better align players with their school-grade peers, enhance inclusivity, and increase participation.

The change will apply to all USYS-sanctioned league and cup competitions (including National Championships, Presidents Cup, National League, etc.) and US Club-sanctioned leagues and competitions (ECNL, ECNL-RL, NPL, USYS, etc.).

Who Will Be Impacted?

All current recreation and competitive programs will be affected by this update. These include Recreation, Juniors, Classic, Pre-ECNL, ECNL-RL and ECNL, as well as indoor leagues and all camps and clinics.

As this is a systemic change, some players will find themselves in a different age group than they would have been under the previous model. This will impact how teams are formed, and we are working diligently to ensure a smooth transition for the 2026–27 season, with careful consideration of all player development needs.

We recognize that such transitions may lead to questions and concerns. Rest assured, our staff is already working through the details to develop the best possible processes to support both players and families.
